Training Report - Mt.Tokachidake (Mt.Tokachi) 29

K participated in this training. It was minus 26 degrees Celsius at the KTV (katabatic valley). The travelled distance was 24km.

The most part of the sky is covered of clouds. However, slight radiative cooling occured. The upper end of the ground inversion is situated at the altitude of 300m. Like the last training at the Mt.Tokachidake (cf. Mt.Tokachidake 28), he wore disposable hot packs on the back of hands, on the instep and also in the pockets to warm the batteries fo cameras as well. Moreover, he suffered from frozen glasses during the last training on the Mt.Tokachidake. So this time he wore protector band which prevents glasses from freezing blocking the expiration. It was minus 18 dgrees Celsius at the foot of the mountains.

The training commenced.

He heard sound of frost crack 7 or 8 times. A frost crack sounded just next to the road when passing the Nakachaya Gate.

The snow removal wasn't good up to the Nakachaya Gate. But after passing the gate, the state of snow removal became better.

Hard rime begins at the altitude of 800m. Just before reaching this altitude, he drank all the unfrozen content of the bottle.

The Mt.Furanodake (Mt.Furano). This time, the taillamp of CatEye is fully operational. Probablly the voltage of the battery he had changed before the last training on the Mt.Tokachidake became stable and the temperature isn't so low like the last time.

Entering the KTV (katabatic valley). Super cold katabatic wind is descending. He's breathing very carefully not to blow the expiration over the glasses, the display of cycle-computer, camera and the brake cables. Because the water in the expiration freeze them instantaneously.

The hard rime suddenly ends at this altitude. There must have been no cloud from this altitude.

From time to time. trees are covered with hard rime. Some fragments of clouds must have passed there.

He's at the summit again. He spoke with several snowboarders there. One of them is familiar with cycling. He asked K many questions and asked permission of taking photos of K. Moreover, K wears Burton gloves for snowboard. This fact amused them.

Commencing the descent. The state of the road surface isn't so bad. However, you should pay more attention to brake the front wheel with this new tire (cf. Mt.Tokachidake 25) in comparison with the old tires as it looses the grip more easily than the old tires.

We have less hard rime than the hour of climbing.

During the descent, he met some friends driving cars. They parked their cars and K stopped to talk for a while.
